Wood floor care

Maximize sweeping, minimize mopping. How to clean hardwood without water damage and protect it from area rug backings.

Need it restored? See wood floors

Wood floor care comes down to two rules: maximize sweeping and minimize mopping. Wood does not like water, and many of the wood restorations we have done were caused by too much water during regular cleaning.

Everyday cleaning

  • Dust mop daily.
  • Clean with a light mist and a washable microfiber pad, such as the Bona system sold at most building supply stores.
  • Don’t wet-clean the whole floor each time. Spot-clean only the areas that need it.

Area rugs

Area rugs work well on wood, but check the backing. Many are rough enough to scratch the finish, so put a soft pad underneath. Avoid heavily rubberized pads: some sweat and stick to the wood. If that happens, the floor will need professional cleaning, or sanding and resealing.

Quick answers

Can I mop hardwood floors?

Sparingly. Water causes much of the wood floor damage we repair. Dust mop daily and spot-clean only the areas that need it with a light mist and a microfiber pad.

Are rug pads safe for wood floors?

Use a soft pad that isn't heavily rubberized. Rough rug backings scratch wood, and some rubber backings sweat and stick to the finish.
